Messenger’s Medicine: Principles from the Prophet
The Blessed Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was sent to teach all humans how to live the optimal life in order that they may draw close to Allah and be in His Divine pleasure forever. His teachings taught us the perfect way to turn everyday aspects of our lives into worship and how to do so optimally. One such aspect was the emphasis he placed on health and well-being.
The unique emphasis on living a balanced healthy life was preserved thereafter by the great scholars of Islam. The great Imam Ash-Shafi’i said:
“After the science which distinguishes between what is halal and what is haram, I know of no science which is more noble than that of medicine.”
It is in this spirit of preserving this aspect of our tradition that we are honored to host a seminar “The Messenger’s Medicine: Principles from the Prophet.” This seminar will be taught by Dr. Rehan Zaidi, a naturopathic physician who specializes in the integration of both conventional and alternative medicine.
The seminar will give you an overview of basic Islamic principles regarding health that have been derived from an Islamic medical tradition. You will learn, insha’Allah, how to take a holistic look at health, traditional methods of treating illnesses, importance of dietary modification, Islamic traditions, and precise things that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did medicinally. Students will also learn how to identify constitutional types (mizaj/temperaments), know what kind of illnesses they and others are predisposed to and find out how to read people’s health by their physical appearance.
Dr. Rehan will also review the Qigong exercises he covered in the workshop he conducted in Toronto and teach a new exercise.

Healthy at a Hundred
Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said “There are two blessings in which many people suffer loss: health and leisure.”
Despite growing life expectancy rates in the west, a number of chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease are becoming common even as early as middle age. These diseases impact personal lives, communities and also put a burden on the public health institutions. Moreover as Muslims, these diseases usually limit our ability to worship Allah and to serve our families and communities in a more active manner. Fortunately, many of these diseases are preventable through natural lifestyle changes.
Join Dr. Rehan in a interactive discussion on aging healthily and tips on taking the means to “Healthy at a Hundred” covering topics including heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, mental health, exercise and diet.
